I will be using many ways to help your student gain the concepts of Math. Some of these include traditional methods, new strategies, technology, cross curricular projects, skill based games, small groups as well as whole group instruction.
Final Score:Players need 2 dice (they can be shared or one pair for each player) Player 1 rolls the dice and writes an addition sentence using the 2 numbers rolled. Player 2 does the same. The player with the higher sum is the winner for that round. You can add each round if you’d like and decide on the number of rounds to play or the final score you need to reach to be declared the winner of the game.
Variations: You can roll 3 dice and add all three numbers or even multiply the numbers rolled for a greater challenge. (picture strategies are encouraged at any stage as a help for those that need it.)
Final Score 2:This game is played the same way but using playing cards. Players draw 2 cards rather than rolling dice. Again variations can be added as needed for a challenge.
Strike out:Another variation on Final Score, this game uses playing cards and subtraction. Players turn over 2 cards and create a subtraction problem using the 2 numbers. (Remember the big number always comes 1st in subtraction.) Players then draw enough pictures of an object to represent the largest numbered card. Then they will “strike out” (cross out) the number corresponding to the 2nd card. Leaving some pictures unmarked (which should be the answer to the subtraction problem) Dice can be used as well in place of playing cards.
Customer and Banker: In this game players need objects that represent ones, tens and hundreds. A ones and tens charts can also be helpful. A number is chosen (higher than 10). One player rolls the dice and counts out the ones objects to equal the number rolled. (This player is the customer.) The banker is also watching so they are ready to trade the ones on for a block of 10 and then trading tens in when a block of 100 is needed. Once the chosen number is reached the players trade jobs. (If more than one group of students is playing, the 1st group to reach the chosen number can be declared the winning team)
Nim:This game is for 2 players. 15 items are needed to begin. Players take turn choosing only 1 or 2 items to pull from the pile of 15. The player that pulls the last item loses.
